Packing

I know there are still 10 days left... but I'm already packed! Of course I still have heaps of paperwork left to do - it turns out it's a more complicated process to leave Saudi than it was to come here! But my flight is booked so mafe mushkila ("no problem" in Arabic, we hear it all the time!)

10 days to go!

RUH

Friday night, flying back from Jeddah and I realized this will be the last time I land at the King Khalid International Airport... cue soft weeping! Just kidding! In no way will I miss the Riyadh Airport!

Just 11 days to go!

Saudi Flag

Showing some Saudi pride.

Jeddah!

Last weekend off in Saudi so I headed to Jeddah to get a feel for Saudi by the sea. More details to come...

Emergency

The Emergency room sign on the wall outside the front entrance... to think in just two weeks' time I won't be seeing it anymore! And as an aside, this is my last night shift for what could be a very long time - alhamdullailah!

Just 14 days to go!

Crochet

Roommate Amy is good with the hooks! She has spent hours slaving over this lovely baby blanket for a friend of ours.

Only 15 days to go!

Tree Kitten

Little Eid makes another blog appearance! We had to move apartments for a week for repairs to be done to our place. Our new apartment has a tiny concrete yard with three dusty trees in it. Needless to say the kitten is head over heels! She now spends most of the day climbing the trees and trying to trick the birds into coming close enough so she can swat them.

Arab news

I have no idea what the newspaper says, but that guy looks pretty happy. He is really rocking the ghutrah (red and white head piece thing).

Baileys

Okay, one haram picture can't hurt.

Bring on the music

Weekend birthday party madness... I opted to neglect all the haram pictures (haram means forbidden, an important concept in our Saudi lives) and go instead for the best birthday present ever!

Fire in the desert

This is the housing complex I walk through everyday on my way to work; I live in an apartment next to this complex. The palm tree and the fire hydrant are looking especially colourful and shiny thanks to photoshop, in reality everything is more dust coloured and dull.

Just 20 days to go!

Nissan

The streets of Riyadh are filled with these little pickup trucks (and their Toyota cousins). It would appear that most boys are given one for their 12th birthday (okay, I can't back that up, but seriously, I do see a lot of children driving cars here!) My friend calls these "terrorist trucks" because CNN has a propensity to show would-be "terrorists" riding around in the back of these trucks waving rifles.... This one is just a maintenance truck from the hospital though, so pretty sure I'm safe!

Mac Attack!

After an entertaining Skype session with my parents last night, thought I would throw up this ode to Mac... once you go Mac you'll never go back! Mum... make the switch!

Camel

Today's a big day! One year ago today I landed in this strange land... a land where I can't drive a car, or ride a bicycle; where I have to wear a cloak that makes me look like a wizard; and where I can buy camel meat at the grocery store, but NOT bacon! A very strange place indeed!

CPR Joy

Free ACLS course, why thank you!

24 days to go!

Starbucks

The Middle East does have Starbucks... but they don't have any of the good drinks, and the pastries are never any good, and we have to sit in the womens' section. But at least they have fun mugs to collect (this is my roommate's collection, I have yet to start one).

25 days to go!

Laundry

I'm a day late on this one... busy Riyadh weekend full of "laundry".

All a flutter

Only 28 days to go!

Lonely Planet

As if living in the middle east weren't adventure enough, this year has generously provided me with the amazing opportunity to travel! This year, in which I visited more than a dozen exciting places, has soothed my wandering spirit (at least for a few months:)

Some of the highlights of my travels around the globe included rescuing a baby sea turtle in Oman, hiking in the Himalayas in Nepal, learning to scuba dive in Sri Lanka and ringing in the New Year in style in Dubai. I'll be sure to write more about my adventures later.

Leaving in 29 days!

Running

As it turns out, there isn't much to do in Riyadh except take up running - but only in the ladies only gym! It is certain that the world would end if some willful woman tried to run down the streets of Riyadh.

I am training to run a 5k race the week I get back to North America - if there are any actual runners reading this, please don't mock; some of us mortals do actually have to train to run 5k!

30 days to go!

Final Countdown

I can't believe it has been almost a year since I left Canada! Actually it is has been more than a year if you go by the Hijra calendar, which they do here in Saudi Arabia. And so, it is time for me to move on to my next adventure! I do plan to chronicle my time in the Sandbox once I am safely aware from internet censorship so stay tuned... but in the meantime, enjoy my photo countdown to the day I leave (I'm off by a couple days because I am posting this late, but I'll catch up).

31 days until I'm leaving on a jet plane!
